A 2,800 SF multi-level putting green & pool surround in Willow Park

Bearcat Turf & Outdoors partnered with Provender Homes on a flagship backyard build for a homeowner on a Willow Park golf-course property in Parker County, Texas. The brief was specific: the customer wanted a backyard where he could practice multiple shots — not just putts — and tie it cleanly into a new Plungie pool installation.

What we delivered was a 2,800 square foot multi-level putting and short-game experience, framed by retaining walls, with chipping approaches built into the structure of the green itself. The customer rolls putts on tournament-spec turf, chips onto the green from multiple positions, and walks out of the pool onto a soft Natural Blend Pro lawn — all on a single integrated install.

The two-line spec: Tour Elite tournament putting-green turf on the multi-level green, Tour Tee chipping turf in the approach zones, Natural Blend Pro for the surrounding lawn and pool surround. Multi-level retaining-wall layout with multiple elevation changes built into the green design.

Why this install is different

A typical backyard putting green is one elevation, one cup count, and one type of turf. This one is three of each.

The customer is a serious player. His ask wasn’t “give me somewhere to roll a few putts after dinner” — it was “give me a backyard where I can actually work on my game.” That means more than a flat 200 SF strip with a couple cups. It means:

  • Elevation changes that mimic real course conditions, not putt-putt flatness
  • Chipping zones at multiple distances and angles so he can practice approach shots, not just lag putts
  • Surrounding turf that ties the play area to the rest of the yard so the green is part of a backyard, not an isolated feature

Provender Homes brought us in early so the green could be designed and engineered alongside the Plungie pool install rather than retrofitted around it. That integration is what makes a build like this read as a single project instead of a stitched-together feature collection.

What got installed

  • TurfHub Tour Elite — the tournament-spec putting-green surface across the multi-level green itself. White natural rubber Action Back, 3/16” stitch gauge, mono-filament nylon fibers. The same turf we put on commercial putting greens like the 3-hole green at Hudson Oaks Shopping Center for Birdie Bros indoor golf. Real club-grade roll.
  • Tour Tee chipping turf — built into multiple chipping zones around the green. Tour Tee is a denser, slightly longer-pile chipping-spec turf that holds the ball for short-game shots better than putting-green turf. The customer can chip onto the green from several positions and distances, simulating real on-course approach work.
  • TurfHub Natural Blend Pro — for the surrounding lawn and the Plungie pool surround. Natural-toned residential turf that reads like real grass at a distance, hold its color under sun and pool-deck traffic, and ties the green into the rest of the yard rather than fencing it off.
  • Multi-level retaining-wall structure — the green is built across multiple elevation changes, with retaining walls defining the level breaks. The result reads like a real course green with shaped contour, not a flat practice mat.
  • Plungie pool surround integration — the surrounding turf was installed flush to the Plungie pool’s deck transition, with seam placement coordinated to avoid conflict with the pool coping. No exposed sub-base at the pool edge; no trip points where lawn meets hardscape.
  • Drainage-first sub-base — 3”–4” of crushed stone, two-lift compaction at 95% Standard Proctor, laser-graded to drain away from the pool and the house foundation. Drainage rate exceeds 30 in/hr per ASTM F1551.
  • 15-year manufacturer warranty on every turf product installed. UV-stabilized, anti-acid, non-flammable yarn across the entire TurfHub catalog.

Working with Provender Homes

Provender Homes led the build of the Plungie pool and the surrounding hardscape on this property. Bearcat scoped the turf and putting-green portion in coordination with the Provender schedule — base prep sequenced around the pool excavation, turf install timed to follow the pool finish and the retaining-wall structures.

For builders, GCs, and pool contractors planning a similar Parker County build: we coordinate inside the project’s pull-plan, supply COIs and submittals before mobilization, and don’t subcontract our install crew. The same Bearcat install team that walked the yard with the homeowner is the team that did the seam work.

Aerial perspective

The drone shots above tell the story that ground-level photos can’t. From the air you can see the green’s elevation structure, the relationship between the chipping zones and the green, the pool integration on the property, and the golf-course context beyond the property line.

This is what “a backyard with a destination” looks like at the residential top end. A property with this kind of feature isn’t just a yard with a putting green — it’s a backyard the family designs evenings around.

Layer by layer

How a multi-level Bearcat green reads from the soil up:

  1. Sub-grade preparation across multiple elevations. Each level of the green has its own sub-grade target depth and slope. Parker County clay was excavated to the spec required for stable sub-base across the entire footprint.
  2. Geotextile separator fabric. Non-woven needle-punched separator above the sub-grade and below the aggregate at every elevation. Prevents silt migration from the clay into the aggregate over time — non-negotiable on a multi-year build.
  3. Engineered aggregate base. 3”–4” of crushed stone per level, two-lift compaction at 95% Standard Proctor. Laser-graded to shape the intended contour of each elevation independently.
  4. Perforated drain network. PVC drain rock embedded in the sub-base, tied to discharge paths that route storm water away from the Plungie pool and the house foundation.
  5. Retaining walls — sequenced with the GC’s hardscape scope, framing each elevation transition.
  6. Tour Elite putting-green turf on the green levels; Tour Tee chipping turf in the chipping approach zones; Natural Blend Pro across the surrounding lawn and pool surround.
  7. Engineered infill — putting-green silica spec on the green, residential infill on the lawn, cool-blend on the pool surround zones.
  8. Cup placement and final brush-out — multi-position cups set into each green level for varied practice routines.

Putting green & pool surround FAQ

How long does a 2,800 SF multi-level install like this take?

Typically 7–10 days on site for a build at this scope: 2–3 days for excavation and sub-grade prep across the elevation changes, 1–2 days for aggregate base and drainage at each level, 2 days for turf install across the multiple zones (green, chipping, surround), plus retaining-wall coordination with the GC and pool builder. Weather-dependent on the base-prep days.

What does a build like this cost in Parker County?

Multi-level putting green installs run $11–$16 per square foot in 2026 Parker County pricing — driven up by the elevation engineering, the Tour Elite + Tour Tee + Natural Blend Pro three-turf spec, the retaining-wall coordination, and the drain network. For an honest project-specific number, use the DFW turf installation cost calculator.

Why three different turf products on one install?

Because each zone is doing a different job. Tour Elite is engineered for true tournament roll on the putting surface. Tour Tee is engineered for chipping — denser, longer pile, better ball-hold for approach shots. Natural Blend Pro is engineered to read like a residential lawn and survive pool-deck traffic. Using the same turf across all three would compromise at least one job. The premium spec for a serious-player build is purpose-fit turf in each zone.

Can I get a green like this on a smaller lot?

Yes — at smaller scale. Multi-level putting greens scale down to 800–1,200 SF without losing the practice value. The constraint is usually appetite for ground-up base prep + retaining-wall coordination. We’ve built tight 200–400 SF single-elevation greens that play beautifully for homeowners who don’t need the chipping zones.

How long will the install last?

15 years under the manufacturer warranty on every Tour Elite, Tour Tee, and Natural Blend Pro product. With light maintenance (monthly leaf blow, quarterly brush, infill top-off every 2–3 years), 18–20 years of tournament feel is realistic.

Do you work with pool builders and home builders like Provender Homes?

Yes. We coordinate inside the GC’s pull-plan, supply COIs and submittals before mobilization, and sequence turf install around the pool/hardscape schedule. Free site walks for any DFW pool builder, GC, or home builder planning a turf component on a residential build. See the commercial turf service page for developer/GC workflow and the pool builders page for residential pool-build coordination.

Are you HUB Certified?
