Why turf for sports fields in DFW

Natural-grass fields in North Texas realistically support 8-12 hours of play per week before the surface degrades. Between August heat, spring thunderstorms that leave a field unplayable for three days, and the shrink-swell cycle in our clay soil, a well-built grass field still costs $80,000-$150,000 a year to maintain and still can't match the playing hours of turf. A properly engineered turf field supports 40-plus hours a week, year-round, and pays back its capital cost in rentals and maintenance savings inside of five years.

What Bearcat installs for sports programs

  • Full baseball and softball infield conversions — skinned-area retrofits or full-field turf with regulation mound, plate, and base positions.
  • Multi-purpose soccer fields — full-size pitches, 7v7 training fields, multi-field complexes. See our complete guide to multi-purpose sports field construction.
  • Football and lacrosse fields — permanent striping or paint-overlay for multi-sport programming.
  • Training fields and batting-cage complexes for clubs and academies.
  • Commercial playground turf — ASTM F1292 fall-height rated shock pad + turf for parks and school programs.

Specifications we install to

Sports field specs run tighter than residential: 6-8 inches of excavation, 4-6 inch Type 1 crushed-stone sub-base compacted in two to three 2-inch lifts to 95% Standard Proctor density, laser-graded to a 0.5-1% slope with perimeter and lateral French drain systems, shock pad on competitive-grade fields, monofilament polyethylene fiber at 48-54 oz face weight, coated-sand or organic infill blended for heat management and G-Max safety. Every bid submittal includes ASTM F2898 drainage certification and F355 Gmax target documentation.

For the full technical reference we give to architects, athletic directors, and facilities managers, see our ASTM standards for synthetic turf page.
