How Much Does Artificial Turf Cost in DFW? An Installer's Honest Answer

Straight numbers on what artificial turf actually costs in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, what drives the price up or down, and how to know if a quote is fair.

Every homeowner who calls us has the same first question: “What does this actually cost?”

Most installer websites dance around it. We don’t. Here is the honest answer, based on what we charge, what the market in DFW looks like in 2026, and what actually drives price up or down on a real job.

The short version

For a standard residential install in Dallas-Fort Worth, expect to pay $8 to $14 per square foot for a complete turnkey job. That includes:

  • Removal of existing sod or dirt
  • Base prep (excavation, compaction, crushed stone)
  • Turf material
  • Infill
  • Labor
  • Cleanup

A typical 1,500 sq ft backyard therefore runs $12,000 to $21,000 all-in.

Bigger yards get cheaper per square foot (the base prep is a fixed cost spread over more area). Smaller yards run higher per square foot for the same reason.

What actually drives the number

The per-square-foot number isn’t arbitrary. Four things push it up or down.

1. Turf quality (biggest lever)

There is a real difference between an entry-level turf and a premium one. At the low end, you get a decent-looking product that holds up for 8-10 years. At the high end, you get denser fibers, better pile recovery, longer UV warranty, and a more natural look that lasts 15 years.

Lower-tier turf: around $8/sq ft installed. Premium: around $12-14/sq ft installed.

We do both. We are honest about what fits a family’s situation. A starter home with a five-year horizon doesn’t need the top tier. An estate with mature trees and a 20-year outlook probably does.

2. Base work (second biggest lever)

The base is the part you don’t see but absolutely feel. A properly engineered base (excavation to 3-4 inches, layered crushed stone, compacted in lifts, with drainage contoured in) is what makes turf stay flat, drain fast after Texas storms, and not develop bumps over time.

Cheap installs skip this. They lay turf over minimally-prepped dirt. It looks fine for six months, then the low spots puddle, edges lift, and by year two the yard looks worse than natural grass would.

Proper base work adds $1-2 per sq ft to the quote. Worth every dollar.

3. Infill choice

Infill is the sand-or-rubber material that gets brushed into the turf fibers to weight them down and keep them upright.

  • Silica sand: cheapest, fine for most residential
  • Antimicrobial / zeolite blends: better for pet households (neutralizes odor)
  • Cooling infills: reduce surface temp 10-20° F on hot days, matters if you have kids and pets outside all summer

Pet-household upgrade: roughly $0.50/sq ft. Cooling infill: roughly $1/sq ft.

4. Site complexity

Some lots install fast. Others don’t.

Factors that add cost:

  • Tight back-of-lot access (wheelbarrow work vs. truck access)
  • Removal of mature sod with deep root systems
  • Existing irrigation that needs to be capped or rerouted
  • Tree roots or large rocks in the base area
  • Slope work or custom drainage

On a tricky lot, site complexity can add $1-2 per sq ft. On a clean, accessible lot, it’s zero.

What you should NOT pay for

Some quotes include charges that aren’t necessary. Watch for:

  • Deposits over 50%. A healthy installer doesn’t need most of the job’s money upfront.
  • Separate disposal fees. Most installers bake this in. If it’s a line item, it’s either double-billed or the scope was underquoted.
  • Daily rate labor upcharges after the initial quote. A fixed-price quote should stay fixed unless you change the scope.
  • “Warranty fees” on top of the job price. A legitimate warranty is included in what you already paid.

How to sanity-check any quote

Three questions to ask any installer:

  1. What’s the base going to be? Answer should include excavation depth (3-4 inches minimum) and crushed stone, compacted in lifts.
  2. How long is the material warranty? Legitimate turf is warrantied 12 to 15 years. Anything shorter is entry-level product. Anything longer is a sales tactic — no turf we have ever seen has a genuine 25-year warranty, nor should it last that long. If someone quotes you a 20+ year warranty, read the fine print carefully, because almost all of them turn out to be prorated to the point of meaninglessness by year 10.
  3. Who’s doing the install? If they subcontract out, you have no control over who shows up. We are a family-owned business with our own crews — the same people install every Bearcat project, and we stand behind the work.
