What makes turf "pet turf."
Dogs are hard on a yard because of what happens underneath it. DFW clay does not drain on its own, so liquid has to go through the turf, through a crushed-stone base, and away. Every pet install we build is specified from the sub-base up for that job: antimicrobial infill, a fully perforated backing, a 4-inch compacted crushed-stone base, and reinforced seams on the paths dogs run every day.

What makes turf pet turf?
Five things: antimicrobial infill to stop odor-causing bacteria, a fully perforated backing so liquid drains in seconds, a 4-inch compacted crushed-stone sub-base, reinforced seams along the fence lines and paths dogs run every day, and an enzyme-based treatment applied at the end of the install. Standard lawn turf with budget infill and semi-permeable backing does not perform the same way under dog traffic.
Does pet turf smell?
It should not. Odor comes from bacteria growing in the infill and from liquid that cannot drain. Antimicrobial infill, open drainage and the enzyme treatment at install address both. Annual maintenance keeps it that way, and our Pet Household maintenance plan includes an enzymatic deep clean.
Does turf get too hot for dogs in a Texas summer?
Infill choice matters. Light-colored silica or Envirofill runs 15 to 25 degrees cooler than black crumb rubber in direct sun, and it is standard on our pet installs. We do not specify black rubber infill.
How much does a dog run or pet turf yard cost?
Pet turf runs $7 to $11 per square foot installed in DFW. A 200 to 500 sq ft dog run is typically $1,400 to $5,500, a backyard pet zone $3,500 to $11,000, and a full backyard with pet turf $7,000 to $22,000. See the pet turf cost guide for the breakdown.
