Putting green FAQ
How much does a backyard putting green cost in DFW?
A Bearcat-installed backyard putting green in DFW runs $8,000 to $35,000+ depending on size, cup count, undulation complexity, and fringe design. A compact 250 to 400 SF green with 2 cups and simple fringe runs $8,000 to $14,000. A full 600 to 1,200 SF tournament-style green with 3 to 4 cups, real undulation, and integrated fringe runs $18,000 to $35,000+. The all-in number includes Tour Elite nylon fiber, engineered sub-base with custom shaping, cups, flags, and a 15-year manufacturer warranty.
What turf product do you use for putting greens?
Bearcat installs Tour Elite nylon fiber on all backyard putting greens. Tour Elite is a tournament-specification nylon yarn designed for the putting surface — not a landscape product repurposed for greens. The fiber is installed at 3/8 inch pile height, which is the standard for a fast, realistic ball roll. Stimp speed is matched to the homeowner's preference during the site visit: we can build a slower, more forgiving green or a faster tour-speed surface depending on the handicap and practice goals.
Is a backyard putting green worth it?
Yes, particularly in DFW where golfers play year-round. The ROI calculus: a good municipal green fee in DFW runs $40 to $80, and serious golfers who practice 3 to 4 times per week spend $6,000 to $16,000 per year on rounds and range fees. A home green eliminates the drive, fits a 20-minute session before work, and stays lit and private all year. Most Bearcat putting green customers describe consistent improvement in their short game within the first 60 days of regular home practice.
What size yard do I need for a putting green?
A meaningful practice green starts at around 200 SF, which gives you enough room for a 2-hole short-putt circuit. Our most popular size range is 400 to 800 SF, which allows for 2 to 3 cups, real undulation, and a variety of breaking putt angles. Larger 1,000+ SF greens with 4 to 6 cups are built for serious low-handicap golfers who want a true course-simulation experience at home. We have also installed greens on covered patios and in garages for year-round indoor use.
How long does a putting green installation take?
A 300 to 600 SF green installs in 3 to 4 days. Larger 800 to 1,200 SF greens with complex undulation run 5 to 7 days. The base layer is the most time-intensive step: we excavate, shape the undulation by hand with crushed granite, compact in two lifts, and let it set before laying turf. That base work is what gives the green its contour and stability for the life of the install.
How do you build real undulation into a backyard green?
The undulation lives in the sub-base, not the turf. We excavate 4 to 6 inches, then hand-shape crushed granite to the contour design mapped during the site visit. Slopes, breaks, and pin placement are planned before the first shovelful moves. The turf drapes over that shaped base, conforming to the grade. A flat mat laid on grade has zero undulation regardless of the fiber quality. Every Bearcat green has real base-layer contouring.
Do DFW putting greens hold up in summer heat?
Yes. Nylon fiber used in Tour Elite is more heat-tolerant than polyethylene landscape turf. In direct Texas sun, the surface temperature rises but the fiber does not degrade or mat down the way landscape turf can. We recommend a silica sand infill for putting greens rather than rubber crumb — it stays cooler, does not affect ball roll, and does not scatter onto the adjacent landscape. Most Bearcat greens in DFW have been in place 3 to 8 years with no fiber degradation.
What is the warranty on a Bearcat putting green?
Every Bearcat-installed putting green carries a 15-year manufacturer warranty on the Tour Elite turf fiber and a 1-year labor warranty on the base and seam work. The labor warranty covers seam failure, surface wave or settlement, and drainage performance. We are family-owned and have been installing in DFW for years — the warranty is backed by a company that is still in business and still answers the phone.
