Why Bearcat
The honest case for hiring Bearcat on a complete-backyard build
Owner-led design. In-house install crew, never subcontracted. Fixed-price quotes with no change-order surprises. Named specialist partners on the work we do not do in-house.
Hiring a contractor for a $50K-$200K backyard build is a different decision than hiring someone for a $5K turf install. The buyer cares about different things. This page is the honest answer to "why should we hire Bearcat for the bigger work."
What we actually are
Family-owned
Colin and Lindsey Burns run the company. Same two people who sign your proposal walk your yard and lead the design conversation.
Owner-led design
On every project, the design consultation is led by Colin or Lindsey. Not a sales rep, not a junior estimator. The owner is in the room when the project is scoped.
In-house install crew
Turf, base prep, seams, edging, and finish work is done by the Bearcat crew. We do not subcontract the install. The crew that walks your yard is the crew that builds it.
Fully insured
General liability and workers' comp current and in force. COI available on request before any work begins. Required by most master-planned community HOAs.
BBB Accredited
Accredited business in good standing. Verifiable at bbb.org. Resolved complaints, transparent record.
HUB Certified
Historically Underutilized Business Certified by the State of Texas (woman-owned). Qualifies for public-bid and commercial contracts that require HUB participation.
How we structure the work differently
A few specific things we do that most local landscape contractors do not.
Single fixed-price quote, not time-and-materials
Most contractors at this price tier work time-and-materials, which means the final number reveals itself during the build. Bearcat fixes the price in writing before construction starts. If scope changes, the change order is approved by you in writing with a delta price. No surprises in the final invoice.
Named specialist partners
When the project includes scope outside our in-house expertise (engineered retaining walls, permitted hardscape masonry, custom outdoor kitchens), we name the specialist partner openly in the proposal. The partner's warranty stands behind their portion. You see the structure of the project up front, not after the work is done. Active partnerships include Extreme Landscape Construction for engineered walls.
Single point of accountability
One company designs the build, holds the contract, manages the schedule, and stands behind the result. Even when specialist partners are on the job, your project manager is Bearcat. You do not coordinate trades, chase change orders, or referee between contractors.
Transparent installer pricing
Our cost pages publish real installed prices: $40K-$200K range for complete backyards, $7-$11/SF for turf-only, specimen-by-specimen plant pricing. Customers walk into the consultation already knowing the ballpark.
What we are not
Equally important to be clear about. Bearcat is not the right call for every project. Knowing the boundaries up front saves you a wasted consultation.
- We are not a landscape architecture firm. For multi-million-dollar estate builds with full architectural integration, you want a landscape architect leading the design. We partner with one when a project benefits from it; we do not pretend to be one.
- We are not a pool contractor. We do not dig, plumb, or install custom pools. Pool integration with the surrounding backyard is part of our scope; building the pool itself is not.
- We do not bid against the bottom of the market. A homeowner shopping the cheapest possible turf install per square foot is not our buyer. We will not be the lowest quote you receive on a turf-only job.
- We are not a maintenance-only company. We offer a post-build maintenance program for the projects we install. We do not take on maintenance contracts for projects built by other companies.
