Which infill is right for a Texas field?

Why infill is the decision that deserves the meeting.
Infill is 15 to 25 percent of a field’s install cost, and it is the layer athletes actually interact with: it sets how the surface feels, how it releases a cleat, how it attenuates impact, and how hot it gets. In Texas, that last one is not a footnote. Infill choice is the single biggest surface-temperature decision on the project, bigger than fiber color and bigger than any coating.
The scale matters too. Spec guidance commonly calls for a minimum of 6 pounds of infill per square foot on sports fields, so a full-size field carries hundreds of tons of whatever you pick. That tonnage is why infill choice alone moves a bid by roughly $0.45 to $4.00 per square foot, and why the material you choose in year one is still your problem (or your gift) in year twelve.

Every option on this table has a legitimate use case, including plain crumb rubber, which still wins on pure budget and has more field-years of performance data than everything else combined. The Texas heat question, answered without marketing.
On a 95-to-100-degree DFW afternoon, dark crumb rubber surfaces measure hottest of any infill system, full stop. Organic and coated-sand systems measure meaningfully cooler in the same sun. That ordering is not disputed by anyone, including the rubber industry.
Here is the part the cooler-infill brochures soften: no infill makes turf grass-cool, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something. An irrigated grass field evaporatively cools itself all afternoon; synthetic turf does not, regardless of what is between the fibers. Cooler infill narrows the gap by a real and worthwhile margin. It does not close it.
So the honest Texas heat plan has three layers: pick a cooler infill where budget allows, then manage the rest with shade, scheduling (morning and evening practice in July and August), and rinse-downs, which knock 30 to 50 degrees off the surface for a practice window. The crumb rubber safety question, stated fairly.
This comes up in every board meeting, so here is the state of the evidence, briefly. Crumb rubber has been studied extensively for two decades. The major multi-agency federal review (EPA with CDC/ATSDR) characterized the chemicals present and the exposure pathways and has not established an elevated health risk from playing on crumb rubber fields.
At the same time, some districts and most residential buyers prefer alternatives anyway, for reasons ranging from precaution to parent sentiment to simple dislike of black crumbs in socks and cars. That preference is a legitimate basis for a spec decision, and pretending it away wins no arguments. And separately from the health debate entirely, the heat argument against crumb rubber is not disputed: it is the hottest infill in Texas sun, and for many owners that settles it on its own.

The line item nobody puts in year-one bids: disposal.
A turf carpet is a 10-to-15-year asset. When it is replaced, several hundred tons of infill come out with it, and what that removal costs depends almost entirely on what the infill is. Mixed rubber and sand must be hauled, separated where possible, and landfilled or downcycled. Organic infill composts. Sand gets reused. TPE gets reclaimed and recycled.
The swing is dramatic: infill choice can cut disposal cost at replacement by up to about 90 percent, which on a full-size field is roughly a six-figure difference arriving 10 to 15 years after the ribbon cutting. It appears in almost no year-one bid because the installer quoting you today does not expect to be the one hauling it out in 2038. A note for backyards: the default has already flipped.
On residential projects the market has largely decided this question for you: for backyards, pets, and kids, non-rubber infills are the default ask, and coated sand or organic blends are what we quote first. The tonnage is small enough that the premium is tens or hundreds of dollars, not six figures, so the cooler, cleaner option is usually an easy yes. Turf infill questions, answered.
What is the coolest turf infill? +
Organic infills (cork and coconut/corkonut blends) are the coolest category in direct sun, because they hold moisture and do not absorb heat the way black rubber does. Coated sand systems and wood-based infills also run measurably cooler than crumb rubber. But the honest version of this answer has a second half: no infill makes synthetic turf as cool as irrigated grass on a 100-degree Texas afternoon. Infill choice narrows the gap; shade, scheduling, and rinse-downs close the rest.
Is crumb rubber safe? +
Crumb rubber is one of the most-studied materials in sports construction. The multi-agency federal research effort (EPA, CDC/ATSDR) examined the chemicals present and exposure pathways and did not establish an elevated health risk from playing on crumb rubber fields. That said, some school districts and most residential buyers prefer alternatives anyway, and that preference is a legitimate spec decision, not a mistake. What is not in dispute is heat: black SBR rubber is the hottest infill in direct sun, and in Texas that alone is often reason enough to price the alternatives.
How much infill does a sports field need? +
Spec guidance commonly calls for a minimum of 6 pounds of infill per square foot on sports fields, which on a full-size field is hundreds of tons of material. It cannot be dumped in one pass: infill is brushed in over multiple passes until it reaches the manufacturer’s target density and depth, with the fiber standing upright through the process. Under-filled fields play hard, wear fast, and fail G-Max testing early, which is why infill quantity belongs in the written spec, not in the installer’s discretion.
Can infill be changed later without replacing the turf? +
Partially. Top-offs and amendments are routine: adding infill to restore depth, or blending in a cooling organic layer on top of an existing system, both work within limits. Full swaps are much harder, because fiber height, carpet construction, and the shock pad are engineered around a specific infill system, and extracting several hundred tons of old infill from installed turf is slow and imperfect. The practical advice: choose correctly up front, because year-one infill choice is close to permanent.
What infill should I use for a backyard field? +
For backyards, especially with kids or pets, non-rubber infills are the default ask and usually the right one: coated sand or organic blends run cooler underfoot, do not track black crumbs into the house, and handle pet use better. Backyard fields also do not carry the impact-attenuation duty of a competition field, so the sand-plus-shock-pad question is simpler.
