Batting cage specs.

How we spec a Bearcat-built cage — net gauge selection, frame load, drainage, lighting, ASTM and NFHS references.

Net gauge selection.

Net gauge is the single biggest lifespan variable. Pick low, save money up front, replace the net in three years. Pick high, pay more up front, get fifteen years of use.

Frame selection.

  • Cable / rookie frames — lightest spec. Backyard, low-budget. Wind-rated to about 50 mph.
  • Steel-tube residential frames — powder-coated steel uprights, the standard backyard frame. Wind-rated to 70 mph with proper anchoring.
  • Cimarron commercial frames — heavier-gauge steel, ground-anchor or concrete-pier mount. Wind-rated to 90+ mph for outdoor commercial installs.
  • Suspended frames — hang from existing roof structure. Indoor only. Roof-load engineering required from the building structural engineer.

Mound & plate.

For cages that include a regulation mound and plate (most school and academy installs), we build to the governing rulebook for the level of play hosted in the cage.

  • NFHS / high school: 60'6" rubber-to-plate, 10" mound height, regulation slope.
  • Little League / USA Baseball: 46' or 50' rubber-to-plate depending on division, 6" or 8" mound.
  • Softball: 43' rubber-to-plate (high school / fastpitch), flat circle.

Drainage (outdoor cages).

Outdoor cages need to drain like an infield, or you lose half your weeks to wet ground. Spec mirrors our sports field standard:

  • Subsurface base: 4-6 inches of compacted crushed stone (Type 1 dense-graded), 95% standard Proctor compaction.
  • Drainage slope: 1-2% grade to perimeter french drains or storm system.
  • 15-year commercial weed barrier below the hitting turf.
  • Vertical drainage rate of 30+ inches per hour on the turf system — ASTM F1951 / F2765.

Lighting (indoor cages).

  • 75-100 foot-candles at hitter height is the working spec for daily-use indoor cages.
  • LED high-bay fixtures at 4000-5000K color temp. Avoid 6500K — too cool, washes out ball seams.
  • Fixture spacing tuned so swing apex doesn't fall in a fixture shadow.
  • Backlit machine end — never put a fixture directly behind the machine, hitter loses the ball.

Lighting (outdoor cages).

  • Pole-mounted LED floods, 4-fixture array minimum for a 70-foot cage.
  • Downward-throw fixtures with full cutoff to keep glare off neighboring properties.
  • Photocell or timer tied to municipal lighting cutoff hours (typically 10pm or 11pm in DFW residential).
